Important Notice

 

The news today is both good… and not so good. Young Rino underwent open-heart surgery on Sunday 21 November to repair his heart valve in an attempt to remedy his Ebstein’s Anomaly heart defect. This surgery to repair the heart valve was a complete success!

            However, a week after the surgery Rino’s heart is not adjusting to a heartbeat necessary for the repaired heart and is in need of another surgery to implant a pacemaker. This will regulate his heartbeat and hopefully correct the problem during his healing process. The surgery to implant a pacemaker will take place at 8pm this evening (30 November).

            Rino needs additional donations from the “Friends of Rino” for this second surgery and for the required immediate surgical aftercare. Please find it in your heart to continue to support my child’s medial needs.

The Story of “Together we are Strong”

I will never, ever forget the night we came back from Bangkok after checking on Rino’s heart.

 Rino was exhausted from all the tests and went straight to bed. I felt so helpless, so angry and sad. I looked at Rino’s photo and started crying. I asked myself over and over, ‘What the hell can I do to save his life?’ I looked in at Rino sleeping. And right there and then I made a vow that I was going to move heaven and earth for this lovely boy. I was going to do whatever it took. I was not going to allow him to die. And this was the moment that his song came into my heart.

 Words and images, fragments of my feelings and love – and hope – were crowding into my head and piece by piece I started to write it all down. All my sadness and frustration came pouring out. This was the hardest song I have ever written. Every line I wrote I cried my heart out.

 The next day I recorded the song and put together a video to go with it. People I showed it to were moved to tears. I began to understand that the song had potential. Yes, it had been a way for me to purge my soul of all the pain, but with a little work this could be something special.

 I went over it with my friend and producer, David Donald, and he readily agreed to record and produce ‘Together We Are Strong’. But the first thing he did was to adjust the lyrics. They were (of course!) very personal and emotional – too much so for a professional production.

 The first session was laying down the drumwork and keyboard, with the help of Ovada Showband. And two days later I brought the kids from Rino’s school to the studio and recorded the choir. I can honestly say that this was the highlight of my entire career. When I heard those clear voices all singing ‘Together We Are Strong’, with the pure voice of little Noelyn singing lead, it really moved me.

 Musicians from all over the island were turning up. Rino’s teacher, Richard, laid down a beautiful mandolin track. Martyn Hillery added a fantastic harp. It’s amazing just how many musicians are now involved from jazz to blues and heavy rock. And all with one goal: to create an anthem for Rino.

 At this point in the story all that is needed is the guitars and lead vocals, but that’s in the pipeline now. I’m collecting the best singers on Samui and each of them will sing one line, followed by a powerful chorus in the style of ‘We Are The World’, but with one difference. This one’s about Rino and … together we are strong.

Rino’s Heart

A brave little boy’s story

 Rino Mangon Vogt is just 10 years old. He’s a polite young man, friendly and intelligent, with a direct, alert gaze. But now that gaze has been softened. There’s a knowing edge to it that is older than his years. He now knows why he’s no longer allowed to practice Tae Kwon Do or to scramble around the football field. He’s learned to keep all that boyish energy in check. Because he now understands that he could easily die suddenly from a fall or a misplaced kick.

Rino is suffering from a rare and congenital heart condition known as  Ebstein’s Anomaly. This is present at birth but can show itself at any time, even into adulthood. The fault lies within the valves of the heart. A healthy heart pumps the blood steadily around the body. Rino’s heart does not. One of the internal valves is faulty. It’s enlarged, in the wrong position and is leaking blood back into the heart again. Left untreated his weakened heart will degenerate and form blood clots, giving rise to strokes, tissue damage in the heart and lead to eventual death.

This campaign is, literally, heartfelt. It’s the mission of one man, Rino’s father – musician, songwriter and film-maker – Ritchie Newton. But he is not alone. In the few short weeks since his son was diagnosed with this rare heart condition Ritchie has become energised into action. He is not going to let this happen. Ritchie is spending 18 hours a day visiting people, companies, agencies and the media. He has formed a working trust with certified integrity to handle donations and merchandise. He is organising sponsorships, performances and events. He is using every ounce of his love, passion and energy to save Rino. And he’s asking for your help.

The immediate target is two million Thai baht. That’s 62,000 US Dollars, 50,000 Euros or 42,000 British Pounds. This is the hard cash price of the open-heart surgery and the aftercare that will need to follow. These are the numbers that govern whether Rino lives or dies. This is the sum that Ritchie Newton is determined to raise.

Already donations are arriving. There are sponsors who have presented the trust with free five-star breaks, gourmet dinners, flights and packages and luxury goods which will be auctioned or raffled. Community events are being planned, culminating in an all-day family music festival on 24th October titled Rock4Rino. Expect to see some big names there – Ritchie has the contacts and has already approached Thai rock legend Ed Carabao along with Job 2 Do. Also Ritchie has bared his soul and written the ‘anthem’ of the moment, the signature theme song, “Together We Are Strong”. It is being recorded, complete with children’s choir, and will soon be available on CD, as well as performed live as the finale of Rock4Rino. This event will feature an afternoon of fun for all the family and an evening of serious rock and roll. But then, all of it is serious. No matter what fun people have along the way, this is to save a life. Rino’s life. And Ritchie can’t do it without help.

Wir freuen uns bekanntzugeben, dass wir genügend Spendengelder erhalten haben, um Rino’s dringende Operation zu bezahlen! Dieses war nur möglich durch den Einsatz vieler Freunde und Bekannten aus der ganzen Welt. Leider ist es uns nicht möglich diese alle namentlich zu nennen, möchten uns aber hier auf diesem Weg bei allen bedanken.
• Bangkok Heart Hospital – Die Administratoren des Krankenhauses haben sich nach dem Einsatz der Medien dazu entschlossen die Kosten für die Operation zu senken und ihren eigenen Beitrag dazu zu leisten.

• Ein Internationaler Musikberater aus Hongkong wurde über das Internet auf Rino’s Geschichte aufmerksam und konnte einen seiner Klienten dafür gewinnen eine Spende von 25.000,- USD ( 750.000,- THB ) für Rino’s Operation und Nachfolgebehandlungen zu machen. Diese Spende wurde bereits direkt an das Krankenhaus überwiesen.
Durch diese unerwartet große Spende kann Rino nun in Kürze operiert werden. Sobald wir den Termin vom Krankenhaus erhalten haben, werden wir diesen in der Presse und im Internet veroeffentlichen.

Da der Operationstermin wahrscheinlich sehr nahe am 24.10.2010 liegt haben wir uns dazu entschlossen das Benefizkonzert Rock 4 Rino auf Koh Samui zu verschieben und nach Rino’s Genesung ein freies Konzert für Ihn und alle die geholfen haben zu veranstalten.

Auch diesen neuen Termin werden wir natürlich so bald als uns möglich bekannt geben.
